In 1978 BMW added a 3.5-litre naturally aspirated 218-horsepower injection engine to the 6 Series to fill the sporty niche, at a price of DM 49,400. This one already differed externally from the other two models with front and rear spoilers, side trim strips and BBS aluminium wheels with cross spokes.
The chassis received firmer shock absorbers with reinforced stabilizers, a five-speed transmission and a limited-slip differential with 25% locking ratio (40% at extra cost) were standard. In the interior, there was a choice of leather seats or Recaro sports seats at the front.
In the test by auto motor und sport, the 635CSi can keep up with the Porsche 928 and Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC 5.0.
From 0 to 200 km/h, the 635 CSi is about two seconds faster (36.5 s) than its competitors, which cost around DM 10,000 more.
86.216 Coupés left the factory within 13 years of production.
