Participant in the long-distance trip Beijing – Paris 1997

In May 1960, Peugeot showed the 404, intended as a medium-term replacement for the 403rd house coachbuilder Pininfarina had drawn a bodywork that was both modern and elegant. Under it worked well-known technology, improved in detail again. The press was full of compliments.

The 404 in question was chosen by the previous owner after careful consideration. He acquired it first hand and set off from Beijing to Paris on September 6, 1997. In 43 days of travel, a good 16,000 km were to be covered. This resulted in an average daily stage of 470 km on partly worst paths, up to 5200 m! The Peugeot had previously undergone extensive technical overhauls. The equipment was supplemented by additional headlights, the still mounted underride guard, bucket seats and mud flaps and the start number was attached. The rest was original! The Peugeot turned out to be a good choice, among 93 starters it came 15th and in the meantime, it was even in first position! The trip went without any technical breakdowns, only the collision with a cow in Nepal required a new fender. Today, the Peugeot is still in an unrestored condition, after a long sleep, it was carefully overhauled three years ago. Since then, it has completed the one or other smaller event as brilliantly as the biggest journey of its life.
