The Alfa Romeo Duetto is a roadster produced by the Italian automaker Alfa Romeo from 1966 to 1994. It was also known as the Spider and the Series 105/115. The Duetto was designed by Pininfarina and was powered by a variety of four-cylinder engines. The Duetto was a popular car and was well-regarded for its handling and performance.

The Alfa Romeo Duetto became famous in Americe when it was featured in the 1967 film “The Graduate” starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. The car played a prominent role in the film, with Hoffman’s character, Benjamin Braddock, driving it throughout the movie. The car was a 1966 model, and the car was a red Spider 1600, which was the exact model and color as the car driven by the film’s producer, Lawrence Turman. The car was driven by Hoffman in many scenes in the movie, and it helped to establish the car’s popularity in America. The Graduate helped to establish the Alfa Romeo Spider as a cultural icon and increased the demand for the car in the United States.

The Spider 1750 impressed above all with more torque. The chassis, already highly praised for its time, was further improved by a front anti-roll bar, slight modifications to the dampers and tuning and a brake force regulator. Also, 165 HR 14 tyres with different hubcaps were used, which suited the Spider better than the Duetto’s 155/15s. Other visible changes were: Wooden steering wheel, new ashtray with sliding lid, 2-speed wiper motor, factory outside mirrors on the door and “1750” lettering centred on the boot lid, which was now surmounted by an Alfa emblem replacing the previous lettering. Then there were more invisible changes: Hydraulic clutch actuation, three-phase alternator, longer rear axle ratio (4.30:1 instead of 4.56:1) and a one-piece gear lever to prevent vibration. The cooling system received an expansion tank (because the radiator was lower than the higher engine, this was obligatory) and for an extra charge, a 25-percent limited-slip differential could be ordered. Somewhat later than the engine or model change, the side indicators moved in front of the front wheel and became round.
