The first ideas for a second, off-road model were already in the works at Rover in the early 1950s, when the Land Rover Series I was still rumbling through the world, discovering foreign peoples. The idea was good, they agreed. But then things started to get dull in the British car industry. And when Jeep launched the first luxury SUV, the Wagoneer, in 1963, it still took them a few years in Britain to develop the Range from the concept of the rear-wheel drive Road Rover – a car for everyone who pays others to drive a Land Rover. Not least for it, Rover also looked for an engine, eventually finding it at Buick. There, the controllers clamoured because of the high cost of the aluminium V8, which was originally intended to power sports boats. In England, it survived various changes of name and ownership of the British Motor Corporation, powered a wide variety of models from 1967 onwards, only to end dutifully with Rover in 2005. 35 years before that, it was the ideal drive for the Range Rover, which was initially only launched as a two-door model.
