1962 Volkswagen Beetle Karmann Cabriolet
The 1962 VW Karmann Ghia Cabrio is a classic car produced by Volkswagen. The Karmann Cabrio was a collaboration between the German car manufacturer Volkswagen and the Italian coachbuilder Karmann, resulting in a stylish convertible design.
Here are some details about the 1962 VW Karmann Cabriolet (Volkswagen Beetle):
Body shape: the 1962 VW Karmann Cabriolet had a two-door body with a folding top. It had a compact and rounded design, similar to the standard Volkswagen Beetle.
Engine: The 1962 model of the VW Karmann Cabrio was equipped with an air-cooled, rear-mounted four-cylinder engine.
Transmission: It usually had a four-speed manual gearbox, although some later models had an optional semi-automatic transmission known as an “autostick”.
Features: The Karmann Cabriolet shared many features with the standard Beetle, including a simple interior with basic instrumentation, two rows of seating for four passengers and the characteristic round headlights.
Popularity and heritage: The Volkswagen Beetle, including the Karmann Cabriolet variant, achieved worldwide popularity due to its affordability, reliability and distinctive design. It became an automotive icon and is still cherished by enthusiasts today.
This convertible was featured on the English TV show Salvage Hunters. Watch the full episode about the preservation of this special Beetle here.
This charming Karmann Cabriolet was acquired by Drew Pritchard in 2020, having previously been imported from California.
This highly original example underwent a comprehensive and sympathetic restoration in 2022 by Irvs VW Restorations Ltd. of Cumbria, UK, at a cost of more than £22,000.
The bodywork was removed, the floor pan gutted and blasted. After the necessary metalwork, a new half floor pan was fitted and the vehicle was mounted on a lathe where both sides of the floor pan were painted and polycoated to preserve it for future use.
The engine has been completely overhauled by ‘CoolAir VW’, with new attachments and, wherever possible, new parts from old stock. The carburettor was replaced, a new clutch fitted, a new brake master cylinder, a 12-volt electrical conversion, refurbished wheels with new Michelin tyres and various switches, badges and trims.
During the rebuild, a number of additional parts were replaced with new parts for safety reasons, including a front axle mounting block, body mounts, a rear brake hose, wheel bearings, trailing arm seal kits, a firewall seal, brake lines, tie rod ends, brake shoes, fuel filter, fuel lines, throttle cable, transmission mounts, etc.
The interior also received new interior maps, maps for the rear quarters and a new complete carpet set. The paintwork is largely original with a few minor repairs in places and the convertible top is both functional and original, the Californian sun has really done the car good!
After restoration, the convertible was presented to ‘Salvage Hunters Classic Cars’ and now presents in very good condition. With UK road registration and several restoration invoices, this magnificent convertible is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.
